Preparing for a Move

There are many tasks that need to be completed prior to a move. Staying on top of the things that must be done during the month prior to moving can make moving less stressful.

• Decide what things in your current house are going to be moved and start packing.
• Get change of address forms from the post office.
• Schedule utilities to be disconnected at your current house and reconnected at your new house.
• Call insurance companies to have coverage transferred to your new address or cancelled.
• Sell or give away items that you don’t want to move.
• Get estimates from movers and then decide on a moving company.
• Empty your basement, sheds and any other structures and determine if items in them will be moved, sold,      donated to charity or thrown away.
• If necessary, contact your children’s schools and have their records forwarded to their new schools.
• Begin using items that can’t be moved like household cleaners and frozen food items.
• Make travel plans for getting to your new house.
